I’ve been reflecting on fear recently. Fear can rule our lives when we’re not conscious of it. It can steer your ship while you’re quivering on deck, making you avoid certain experiences and indulge in others.
For example, I don’t feel that comfortable posting my music and ideas. It’s vulnerable to put my stuff out there for people to judge. I could avoid it. But when you keep avoiding fear, your picture of what your life could look like gets smaller and smaller. You start imagining yourself as limited in ways you aren’t truly – because it’s terrifying to realize that you’re free to experience all possibilities, both the most painful and the most pleasurable.
That’s why facing fear is so important. It shows you that many of the restrictions you place on yourself are imaginary. But that doesn’t mean you should act crazy or recklessly. There’s nothing wrong with following rules and being respectful – that’s not something to be afraid of either.
I think it’s about noticing what you’re afraid of moment to moment, and leaning into it. Broadening your sense of what your life can be. Nothing is left out. There is absolute freedom.
